Item Details
A charming and substantial set of four early Victorian spiral iron garden chairs, dating from around the 1840s–1860s. These are particularly good quality examples, with elegant spiral rod seats and backs arranged around a central boss.
Each chair stands on distinctive cast iron lion paw feet, a classical motif popular during the Georgian and early Victorian period, giving the chairs a strong country house character.
The chairs have recently been sympathetically restored by a blacksmith. During the restoration the spiral sections forming the seats and backs were carefully remade, and the central bosses renewed where required, ensuring the chairs are once again strong, stable and fully usable while retaining their original frames, cast feet and overall historic character.
They have been finished in traditional Brunswick green, hand painted rather than powder coated to retain a more authentic and characterful finish in keeping with period garden furniture.
Heavy and well made, these would originally have been intended for use on a terrace, in a conservatory or in the garden of a country house.
A very attractive and practical set of early iron garden chairs with great decorative appeal.
