Heal & Son Arts & Crafts Oak Drop Leaf Dining Table c.1920
A particularly attractive early 20th-century oak drop-leaf dining table, by Heal & Son, with a wonderfully figured quarter-sawn oak top and a substantial Arts & Crafts character.
The table has two large drop leaves, allowing it to fold down to a remarkably compact size when not in use. When opened, it provides a generous dining surface measuring approximately 150 cm long.
The base is especially good, with chunky turned supports joined by stretchers, giving the table a strong architectural appearance. A useful single drawer is fitted to one end.
What really makes this piece for me is the oak. The top has some lovely figuring and colour, particularly across the leaves, and it has developed a warm surface and character through age and use.
A very practical antique table for a smaller home, kitchen or dining room, as it takes up very little space with both leaves lowered but opens out into a substantial dining table when required.
