Fine Arts & Crafts Glasgow School Oak Hall / Window Seat, Attributed to Wylie & Lochhead (c.1910).
A highly attractive and well-proportioned Arts & Crafts oak hall or window seat in the Glasgow School manner, attributed to Wylie & Lochhead, one of the leading makers of the period.
Executed in solid medium-toned oak, the piece displays the refined design and craftsmanship associated with the Glasgow movement. The shaped and arched cresting rail is centred with a beautifully carved yin-yang style seed pod motif, a distinctive decorative element, flanked by tall uprights terminating in characteristic circular finials.
The back is formed with elegant vertical splats, while the arms and overall structure retain a strong architectural presence. The seat incorporates a discreet drawer to the frieze, fitted with its original drop handle and carved detailing, providing practical storage without detracting from the overall aesthetic.
Raised on unusual sled-type feet, the form is both visually striking and functional, contributing to its compact and versatile proportions.
The oak has developed a rich, warm patina, enhancing the grain and depth of colour throughout. Presented in very good condition, the piece is structurally sound and ready for immediate placement, with only minor age-related wear commensurate with its age.
A rare and characterful example, combining decorative appeal with everyday practicality, and ideal for use in a hallway, window setting, or as a statement accent piece.
