Item Details
A rare and highly decorative antique Japanese shadona (display and storage cabinet), crafted in the Hakone region during the late 19th-century Meiji period. This piece beautifully demonstrates the traditional art of yosegi zaiku, with intricate geometric parquetry formed from a variety of native woods.
The cabinet has a distinctive pagoda-inspired, tiered form, combining open display sections with multiple drawers. The richly patterned marquetry across the drawer fronts, sides, and base reflects the precision and craftsmanship associated with Hakone work.
Constructed from Japanese elm and contrasting woods, it offers both warmth and visual depth, making it an eye-catching statement piece suitable for display or practical use.
Condition:
• Some losses to the veneer/parquetry in areas, consistent with age
• Originally fitted with sliding panel doors to certain compartments, now missing
• General age-related wear, but structurally sound and displays well
These imperfections are reflected in the piece and do not detract from its overall decorative impact. The cabinet still presents as a strong example of Meiji period craftsmanship and retains excellent character.
