Antique Chinese Brass Champleve Enamel Table Lamp Oriental

Very decorative late 19th Century / early 20th century brass and enamel vessel, later converted for use as a table lamp. The lamp has a tall baluster-shaped brass body decorated with several bands of colourful champlevé-style enamel work. The decoration includes turquoise grounds, stylised floral motifs, scrolling geometric patterns and Greek-key borders in shades of blue, red, green, cream and black. The combination of the warm aged brass and colourful enamel gives the piece a strong Chinese / Orientalist decorative character. The base appears to have originally been made as a decorative vessel and has subsequently been converted for electrical use. The cable enters through a later aperture to the underside, and the lamp is now fitted with a brass bulb holder. The brass retains an attractive aged patina throughout, with surface marks, rubbing and variation consistent with age and use. There is also expected age-related wear to the enamel decoration. I have deliberately not heavily polished the brass, as the aged surface forms an important part of its character. The underside retains a dark aged finish and shows the construction of the original base together with the later electrical conversion. A striking and unusual lamp with plenty of presence, ideal for a period interior, study, sitting room or more eclectic decorative setting.
