Arts & Crafts Sussex chair attributed to Ford Madox ebonised for Morris & Co (circa 1880–1900)
A classic Sussex chair with ebonised frame and hand-rushed seat, attributed to the celebrated Arts & Crafts designer Ford Madox Brown for Morris & Co.
The chair displays the characteristic turned spindle construction, central roundel back splat and traditional rush seat associated with the highly influential Sussex chair designs. Inspired by vernacular English country furniture, these chairs became one of the most enduring and recognisable products of the Arts & Crafts movement.
The rush seat has been traditionally renewed, ensuring practical use while remaining sympathetic to the original design. The frame retains a pleasing aged patina and is solid and sturdy throughout.
An attractive and increasingly sought-after example of Arts & Crafts furniture, equally suited to a period interior or contemporary setting.
